We kicked off 2024 on a mission to empower our youth by providing them with essential financial knowledge and resources. The event aims to give participants a jumpstart on society, offering insights into financial topics, access to economic literature, and giveaways within the financial literacy domain.
On February 18th, we had the opportunity to partner with sponsors Boeing and lunch sponsor Raising Cane's (Forestville, MD location) to host a youth Smart Money workshop series!
Plus, there was ice skating! Thank you to our sponsors and the Tucker Road Ice Skating Rink for helping us make this event possible.
In March and April 2023, we had the opportunity to partner with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas to host a youth Smart Money workshop series!
In the workshop series, youth participants learned about financial literacy! This training series covered the basics of money management, including setting financial goals and tracking expenses, budgeting and saving, credit and compound interest, and credit reports.
Throughout March and April 2023, we partnered with Leidos and Project Veteran House to host our “Go Veterans for Financial Literacy” workshop series!
The goal of this program was to provide effective programming for veterans who are entering or have entered back into society. Through instruction, veterans were taught about managing debt, creating budgets and savings goals, understanding how credit works, and many more finance-related topics.
Our first event of the year, "Glide Into 2023 with Smart Money," was a major success! On February 4, 2023, we collaborated with Spectra Credit Union to host a free event designed to teach underserved youth and young adults about financial literacy concepts like budgeting, checking & savings, the power of credit, and investing.
Spectra Credit Union kicked off the event with a generous donation of $2,000 to support the Foundation’s financial literacy programming, and we could not be more grateful!
When Xan McGivney, VP, Senior Digital Experience Manager for IM, heard about the Jamaur Law Foundation and their need for volunteers, she was immediately intrigued. The organization’s mission directly aligns with Voya’s Purpose and she knew that her skills could help the nonprofit further its mission, while bringing Voya’s Purpose to life in the community.
Launched in 2018 by Jamaur Law, a teacher at Monument Academy Public Charter School in Washington, DC, the Foundation was founded to create opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals in the greater DC region to build financial security, savings and wealth for the future.
Voya collaborated with the Foundation as part of the company’s new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion skills-based volunteer program that pairs volunteers with nonprofit organizations that serve diverse communities, based on their needs and a volunteer’s specific talent and skillset.
Xan and other volunteers worked with the Jamaur Law Foundation to review, edit and update the nonprofit’s website and move it to a new more robust platform to reach more people. Additionally, the team created brand guidelines for theFoundation, developed a marketing and fundraising strategy and refined all written materials including proposals, scholarship and sponsorship documents, emails templates, bios and more.
On October 29, 2022, we partnered with Chick-Fil-A of Brandywine, MD, for our first community “Trunk or Treat” event!
Chick-fil-A of Brandywine supplied treats, hay bales, pumpkin painting, a bounce house, games, and face painting for the event. At the event, we filled up a savings jar with candy and gave the adults helpful tips regarding financial literacy.
On September 25, 2022, the Jamaur Law Foundation was one of three recipients to receive charitable donations from The District Cup, an annual philanthropic polo match and social event on The National Mall in Washington, DC. The District Cup is a tradition dating back over 100 years committed to the inclusivity and representation of every community in metropolitan Washington, DC.
In November 2021, the Foundation partnered with Many Hats Institute and Summer Hill Polo Farm in Poolesville, MD, to provide a one-of-a-kind experience!
From October through December of 2021, the Foundation partnered with Eric Bruner-Yang, owner of the Power of 10 Initiative, to deliver free meals to families in a financial crisis.
During the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation donated hundreds of protective face shields to local urgent care workers with the help of Sam's Club of Waldorf, MD. These workers tested more than 1,000 patients a week.
